Study: Asthma Prevalence among U.S. and Foreign Born Black Subpopulations
In a study published in the November edition of the Journal of Asthma, researchers looked at whether, among the black population, being born in this country or being born abroad was associated with asthma prevalence. Data was collected from a sample of black respondents in the Dorchester neighborhood of Boston using a community-based participatory research approach. Among adults, there was a strong association between being born outside the United States and not having asthma. Among children there were strong associations between asthma and environmental factors. The findings point to the need for further research into whether place of birth is associated with asthma among the black population in the United States. Future studies should also seek to obtain a representative sample and a larger sample of children.
