1) Event: Evaluating School-Based Asthma Programs Webinar, June 18th

The Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Communities in Action for Asthma-Friendly Environments is hosting a webinar on Evaluating School-Based Asthma Programs on June 18th from 2-3:30pm (Eastern Time). This discussion will utilize the CDC’s Framework for Program Evaluation in Public Health to provide guidance on evaluating school-based asthma programs. The discussion will incorporate lessons learned from the evaluation of two school-based asthma programs, demonstrate considerations for working with schools, and highlight school-based asthma programs. 2) Event: Webinar to provide an Overview of Changes to Asthma Guidelines, June 24th

Breathe California’s Clinical Asthma Collaborative is hosting a web conference for physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nurses, respiratory therapists, pharmacists, and other health professionals to provide an Overview of Changes to Asthma Guidelines: Diagnosis and Screening. The web conference will take place on June 24th from 12pm until 1pm and will be presented by Susan Pollart, MD, MS with the Department of Family Medicine at the University of Virginia School of Medicine. Participants will learn about key concepts in the updated 2007 NIH Asthma Guidelines, including the four components of asthma care and tools for incorporating a multidimensional approach into the care of individual patients. Priority registration will be given to health care professionals serving Napa, Sonoma, and Mendocino counties. 3) Funding Opportunities: HHS Funding Available to Strengthen Non-Profits

The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced the availability of grants worth $50 million from the Strengthening Communities Fund (SCF) to strengthen nonprofit and faith-based organizations that aid families and communities who are struggling in the current economic downturn. The SCF is divided into two parts: The Nonprofit Capacity Building Program and The State, Local, and Tribal Government Capacity Building Program. The Nonprofit Capacity Building Program (NCBP) will make one-time, two-year awards of up to $1 million to lead organizations that will use the funds to build the capacity of nonprofit organizations in distressed communities to address the broad economic recovery issues present in their communities. The State, Local, and Tribal Government Capacity Building Program will make one-time, two-year awards of up to $250,000 to state, city, county, and Indian/Native American tribal governments. The purpose of this funding program is to ensure that governments are using the non-profit community to reach disadvantaged and hard to reach populations about benefits and services available through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. 4) Funding Opportunities: ARB Funding Available to Upgrade Truck Fleets and Reduce Emissions

The California Air Resources Board (ARB) has announced two funding opportunities that are available to help small fleets upgrade their trucks and reduce their emissions. The Voucher Incentive Program (VIP) provides funding to replace 1993 and older, high-polluting vehicles with 2007 and newer, lower-polluting vehicles. The Providing Loan Assistance for California Equipment (PLACE) Program is a program that increases the availability of loan funding available to help fleets reduce emissions. 5) Award Opportunities: EPA Indoor Air Quality in Schools Awards

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has announced their 2009 Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) Tools for Schools (TfS) Award Program. The program consists of five national-level awards: the National Great Start and National Leadership Awards are non-competitive awards for schools or school districts that recognize IAQ management programs that are just starting out – applications are accepted year round. The National Excellence and National Model of Sustained Excellence Awards are EPA’s competitive awards for school districts that recognize outstanding, established IAQ management programs. Applications are due September 30th. The National IAQ TfS Connector Award is a competitive award recognizing individuals and organizations that are making a difference in our children’s health and lives by taking action to promote healthy indoor environments in schools. 6) Event: BAAQMD Public Workshop on the Bay Area 2009 Clean Air Plan, June 11th

The Bay Area Air Quality Management District (BAAQMD) is hosting a workshop on the Bay Area 2009 Clean Air Plan (CAP) on June 11th from 1:30-3:30pm at the MetroCenter Auditorium (101 8th Street) in Oakland. The CAP is a plan to reduce ozone, particulate matter, air toxics, and greenhouse gases. At the workshop District staff will describe the evaluation methodology that will be used to help evaluate control measures for the 2009 CAP based on their potential to protect public health and our climate. Participants will have an opportunity to provide input on the CAP and will hear about future steps and milestones in developing the CAP. 7) Event: Basketball Skills Clinic for Children with Asthma in Oakland, July 11th

Kaiser Permanente, Oakland Parks and Recreation, and 24 Hour Fitness are hosting a basketball skills clinic for children with asthma on July 11th from 9-11am in Oakland. The no-cost clinic is for children ages 9 to 14 and their parents. Children will learn basketball skills, safety tips for exercising with asthma, and how being active is an important part of keeping healthy and parent will gain knowledge and skills to help keep their child healthy. Pre-registration is required and space is limited. To register, contact the Kaiser Permanente Health Education Department at 510-752-6150.

8) Resource: The Berkeley Zaps Asthma Project is Recruiting Participants

The Berkeley Zaps Asthma Project is recruiting participants for their asthma home assessment project. Qualified Berkeley residents can receive a free home assessment and plan to reduce triggers for asthma, assistance accessing healthy home resources, health insurance information, and a $25 Target gift card. This position reports to the Director for the Central Valley Air Quality Coalition, and is responsible for the effective, timely implementation of core programs and campaigns. The Campaign and Programs Manager will coordinate, manage, and evaluate programs and ensure consistency with CVAQ’s mission, vision, and values.
