4) Resources: NCHH Healthy Homes for Community Health Workers course and Training Calendar

The National Center for Healthy Housing (NCHH) has announced their Healthy Homes for Community Health Workers (CHW) course. In order to enhance the capacity of CHWs to deliver healthy homes services, the NCHH created a course specifically for CHWs who work as health advocates in their communities. The course trains CHWs to provide one-on-one and large group education on healthy homes, provide general advice about specific healthy homes problems, and to make recommendations regarding solutions to common healthy homes problems. Visit //www.healthyhomestraining.org/chw/ to learn more about the CHW course and see a list of upcoming course offerings.

The NCHH also has an on-line training calendar that serves as a national clearinghouse for healthy homes related trainings and lists upcoming training opportunities. To access the calendar, visit //www.nchh.org/Training/Calendar.aspx.

5) Resource: CAPHI Summary of the Asthma Guidelines Available in Poster-Size

The California Asthma Public Health Initiative (CAPHI) has developed a poster-sized version of their recently developed resource entitled “Summary of the NAEPP’s EPR-3: Guidelines for the Diagnosis and Management of Asthma”. The resource can be viewed at //www.betterasthmacare.org/files/CAPHIAsthmaMgmtTool_Feb2009-1.pdf – the poster-sized version is 11” x 17” with the two pages side by side and is laminated. To obtain free copies of the poster, contact Patricia Laija at 916-552-9881 or via e-mail at Patricia.Laija@cdph.ca.gov.

6) Resources: California Pan-Ethnic Health Network (CPEHN) Releases Two Reports

CPEHN has released two studies. One study, entitled “Race & Ethnicity Data” provides hard numbers on California’s demographics, health conditions, insurance status, and language needs. It also includes clinical care information and asthma statistics. Data is available for select counties. To read more, visit: //www.cpehn.org/race-ethnicity-data.php.

The other study, “The Landscape of Opportunity: Cultivating Health Equity in California” examines everything from education to housing, neighborhood safety to food access, and criminal justice to health insurance to connect the dots between these factors and how they impact our health. For the full report, visit: //www.cpehn.org/pdfs/LandscapeOfOpportunity.pdf.

7) Resource: ARB Truck Stop Website

The California Air Resources Board (ARB) has developed the Truck Stop website as a one-stop shop experience for information on ARB diesel regulations and available financial assistance opportunities. The website is designed so that a truck owner can answer a few questions about their fleet and get a personalized list of regulatory requirements and potential funding options. The site is designed primarily for the fleet owner but the information is also useful for the truck dealer, lender, air districts and others in the trucking community. To access the site visit //www.arb.ca.gov/msprog/truckstop/truckstop.htm.

8) Study: Web-Based Care can Boost Asthma Control

In a study published in the July 21st issue of the Annals of Internal Medicine, researchers evaluated the effectiveness of Internet-based asthma self-management. Patients who used the online tools demonstrated greater improvements in asthma symptom control over one year and were more likely to report symptom-free days than patients who received only standard care. Participants were randomly assigned to Internet-based self-management or usual care. The Internet-based self-management program included weekly asthma control monitoring and treatment advice, online and group education, and remote Web communications. For report abstract, visit: //www.annals.org/cgi/content/abstract/151/2/110

9) Study: World Health Organization (WHO) Guidelines on Damp and Moldy Buildings

WHO published its first guidelines on indoor air quality guidelines on dampness and mold. The two year study concluded that occupants of damp or moldy buildings have up to a 75% greater risk of respiratory symptoms and asthma. The report also summarizes the available information on the conditions that determine the presence of mold and measures to control their growth indoors.
