Study Examines Relationship between Hypertension and Asthma

In the Jan-Feb 2016 edition of the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology: In Practice, researchers write “an increased prevalence of hypertension has been described in adult asthmatic patients. However, there is no information regarding the interaction of hypertension as a comorbidity with asthma severity.” This study investigated whether hypertension “had any impact on markers of asthma severity in adult asthmatic patients.”

Over 117,000 Kaiser Permanente patients ages 18 years or older were included in the study, which found that hypertension was associated with increased use of asthma medication as well as emergency room and hospital visits.

The study’s abstract is available online.
