Study Examines Effects of Childhood Asthma on Development of Obesity

The January 2017 edition of the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine includes an article investigating if “asthma contributes to the childhood obesity epidemic.” To determine the effects, the researchers measured height and weight annually in 2,171 non-obese children over 10 years. They also performed “a replication analysis… in an independent sample of 2,684” children. “Asthma status was ascertained by parent- or self-reported physician-diagnosed asthma.” The researchers found “children with a diagnosis of asthma at cohort entry were at 51% increased risk of developing obesity.” These results were replicated in an independent sample.
