Effects of Breastfeeding on Risk and Severity of Asthma

Pediatric Allergy and Immunology contains an article in its July 2017 edition examining the influence breastfeeding may have on the risk of asthma and asthma severity in children. Researchers used data from 960 children from the ages of 4 – 12 and compared the presence or duration of breastfeeding with asthma severity and symptoms. The researchers found “breastfeeding was associated with a decreased risk of asthma exacerbations,” and also noted “the association between breastfeeding and asthma exacerbations was strong and statistically significant only in children with a positive family history of asthma.”
