Researchers Assess Efficacy of the Mediterranean Diet in Childhood Asthma

An October 2017 article in Public Health Nutrition synthesized “evidence from the literature to assess efficacy of the Mediterranean dietary pattern in childhood asthma.” In systematic searches “of six databases, three clinical trial registries, and a hand-search of peer reviewed articles” researchers selected 15 of the 436 articles identified. Of those studies, twelve “reported an inverse association between adherence to a Mediterranean dietary pattern and asthma in children.” Further “two studies showed no association and one study showed an increase in asthma systems.”

Researchers concluded “the current systematic review revealed a consistent inverse relationship (protective) between a Mediterranean dietary pattern and asthma in children,” but noted “future well-designed randomized controlled trials are needed to provide solid evidence.”
