Researchers Investigate Association Between Maternal Folate Levels and Infant Bronchiolitis

In the July 2018 edition of the Maternal and Child Health Journal an article assesses “whether higher prenatal folate is a risk factor for childhood respiratory illnesses.” Specifically, researchers “investigated the association between maternal 2nd trimester plasma folate levels and infant bronchiolitis.” Plasma samples were taken to determine maternal folate status, and bronchiolitis was diagnosed using International Classification of Diagnosis-9 codes from Medicaid administrative data. After reviewing their results, researchers concluded that there was not “a statistically significant association between maternal 2nd trimester plasma folate levels and infant bronchiolitis.”
