Effects of Smartphone Applications on Adherence in Asthma Self-Management

An article in the October 2018 edition of the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health investigates if the use of smartphone applications can improve adherence in asthma self-management. Researchers conducted a systematic review of articles, with eight meeting the review criteria of the study. All types of study were considered, which prevented meta-analysis of the studies. Overall, the “studies reported a positive effect of smartphone apps on asthma control, medication adherence, and self-efficacy.” Researchers concluded “smartphone apps may be an effective asthma control tool especially among adolescents who are major users of smartphones.”
